Seksistisch festival - of legitiem? Jumanji ligt onder vuur

Steeds meer festivals doen er alles aan om naast alle mannelijke artiesten ook vrouwelijke artiesten te boeken. Het is een feit dat het grootste deel van de artiesten op festivals man is, en dus wordt er ook veel actie gevoerd om meer vrouwen naar festivals te krijgen. Toch maakte het Australische hip hop festival Jumanji het wel heel bont met hun line-up.

Geen vrouwelijke artiesten op Jumanji

Daar staat namelijk geen enkele vrouwelijke artiest op aangegeven. Een kwalijke zaak volgens Midas.Gold, een van de acts die ook geboekt is voor het festival:

“While I’m super stoked that I’m on a bill with one of my idols, I do recognise the lack of female talent on this bill, I want y’all to know that I accepted this gig with no prior knowledge of who else was being booked (besides the first round of announcements) and while I’m stupid grateful that they reached out to me I do feel the need to say something, silence in compliance, I don’t think this is a fair representation of our scene & rap music globally something I do feel strongly about on different levels & I hope the people at Jumanji Festival can see this & what it might imply intended or not intended.”

Het festival heeft toegegeven dat de afwezigheid van vrouwen op de line-up een probleem is, maar daar verklaren zij legitieme redenen voor te hebben.

“The organisers of the Jumanji Festival would firstly like to acknowledge and apologise for the lack of female artists on the festival this year. It was always our intention to provide the best possible line-up of entertainment across both genders and every effort was made to secure both male and female acts for this festival. Several high profile international female artists were approached and were either unavailable or not within our budget. We opted to secure the best possible artists irrespective of gender that appeal to the Australian hip hop audience and we are committed to delivering an amazing experience for our patrons. We have acknowledged the feedback online and will ensure there is a stronger female presence on our festival in 2019.”

Dat er in 2019 meer vrouwen op het festival zullen optreden staat nu dus zo goed als vast, maar dit jaar zal het publiek het met alleen maar mannen moeten doen. Naast Midas.Gold staan ook Lil Wayne, DJ Mustard en Metro Boomin op het programma. Of de organisatie van Jumanji een bewuste - en daarmee seksistische - keuze gemaakt heeft? Tot zover toe is er geen finaal antwoord.
