Het is een feit: mp3 wordt niet langer ontwikkeld 

"Mp3 is dood", "Mp3 is niet meer", "Mp3 is aan zijn einde gekomen". Die uitspraken komen we vandaag overal tegen nadat de Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits bekend maakte dat het stopt met haar mp3-licentieprogramma. Maar mp3 is niet dood, het kan niet beter worden ontwikkeld. 

FIIC stopt met ontwikkeling van de mp3 

Via een statement laat het Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits weten dat het stopt met de licenties en dus ook ontwikkeling, van de mp3. Dit is wat het te melden had. 

'Technicolor’s mp3 licensing program for certain mp3 related patents and software of Technicolor and Fraunhofer IIS has been terminated.

We thank all of our licensees for their great support in making mp3 the defacto audio codec in the world, during the past two decades.

The development of mp3 started in the late 80s at Fraunhofer IIS, based on previous development results at the University Erlangen-Nuremberg. Although there are more efficient audio codecs with advanced features available today, mp3 is still very popular amongst consumers. However, most state-of-the-art media services such as streaming or TV and radio broadcasting use modern ISO-MPEG codecs such as the AAC family or in the future MPEG-H. Those can deliver more features and a higher audio quality at much lower bitrates compared to mp3.'

Maar ondanks het feit dat het instituut meldt te stoppen met de licenties en de ontwikkeling, gaan de gebruikers er weinig van merken. De hele dj-scene is gebouwd op MP3 tegenwoordig. Wat het instituut er ook van gaat maken, hoogstwaarschijnlijk komt mp3 gewoon als format terug. De benaming mp3 zal niet snel weggaan, maar wel de manier waarop het gebouwd is. Conclusie: mp3 is dus niet dood, maar gewoon uitontwikkeld.
