From Vinyl to CD part 2

”Having taking longer than expected to get off the ground, I finally did a weekend of only cd dj'ing. The reason for the long time was in a way technical, (my cdr laser burnt out, stopping any 12 inch transfers dead), but I can finally say that, for me, it seems inevitable that vinyl is no longer a format that will feature in my dj'ing future. I've had an interesting amount of debate come my way, some from people who are obviously passionate about the romanticism of wax, other declaring I am wholeheartedly wrong about cd sounding better and others welcoming the change. Of course I love vinyl and of course I will miss it (it's been part of my life for 28 years) but I was always told not to shoot the messenger and cd is just that, the sound quality in a club is much better than vinyl for two simple reasons, a) no bass feedback and b) better stereo separation. Both a and b can mostly be sorted out by good location and maintenance but the chances of this happening were about 20%. Some people are convinced that all things digital are inherently evil, again I love analogue but (please note this) "for me" the bass is so much more defined on cd's on a club sound system, the majority of masters for techno are made in digital and mastered at 16bit 44.1 and mp3 is simply not a format I will take seriously in a professional environment.

A few words about my experiences on the DZ1200's; yes the pitch lock doesn't work on bass heavy music, but I never had one on vinyl so I am not bothered and there will always be the question of latency even on a top end Eventide harmoniser. The sonic quality when changing tempo up or down on bass only driven grooves is a shame, there is a weird high pitched harmonic that seems to suggest that the nyquist filtering is shot, I tried bypassing this by using an Apogee mini dac, but it was still present which suggests to me that the cd is converted to analogue and back to digital even before it hits the digi out (I might be wrong so don't quote me), is it a problem though?......In a studio environment, yes without a doubt I will not be using this deck for any mix lp's, but in a club it sounds and works fine enough (although I would love this issue to be fixed in the mk 2's).”
