Amerikaanse regering haalt Sharebeast uit de lucht

De Amerikaanse regering heeft de populaire website Sharebeast uit de lucht gehaald. Dit is de grootste takedown sinds 2012, toen de regering Megaupload uit de lucht haalde. De RIAA (Recording Industry Assiocianton of America) hebben vastgesteld dat er meer dan 100.000 illegale bestanden op de website te vinden waren.

Sharebeast is nu officieel uit de lucht gehaald met de daarbij behorende site Albumjams.com. Sharebeast stond in de spotlights toen de website het album van Kanye West doorlekte in mei dit jaar. Het was de grootste website om gratis je muziek te downloaden.

De takedown is voor de gebruikers misschien een drama, maar voor de muziek industrie is het een enorme stap. Cary Sherman, ceo en woordvoerder van de RIAA, zegt het volgende:

 "This is a huge win for the music community and legitimate music services. Sharebeast operated with flagrant disregard for the rights of artists and labels while undermining the legal marketplace.

Millions of users accessed songs from Sharebeast each month without one penny of compensation going to countless artists, songwriters, labels and others who created the music. We are grateful to the FBI and the Department of Justice for its strong stand against Sharebeast and for recognizing that these types of illicit sites wreak major damage on the music community and hinder fans’ legitimate listening options."
