Film Detroit techno

Gary Bredow snapt niet dat niemand eerder deze film gemaakt heeft. De 30-jarige Amerikaan, zelf afkomstig uit Detroit, heeft er vijf jaar over gedaan om High Tech Soul te maken. Hij begon voor het eerst met filmen tijden het Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival in 2000. Hij heeft de film onafhankelijk gemaakt. “The driving force behind it was a strong interest in film and a strong desire to really know the full story of this music,” legt Gary uit. “I didn't want to abide by anybody else's rules. I wanted to make it myself. Why work for someone else?”

Gary wil met de documentaire het verhaal achter de Detroit techno vertellen. “I thought it was really important to educate the people on this faceless type of music because there is a face, there is an origin, and that origin is Detroit. To understand the music, you have to understand the city. And to understand the city, you have to understand its people.” En dat zijn natuurlijk sleutelfiguren als Juan Atkins, Derrick May en Kevin Saunderson, van wie hij uitgebreide portretten maakte. Maar ook jongere artiesten als Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills en Carl Craig komen aan het woord.

Natuurlijk ontbreekt de muziek zelf ook niet. High Tech Soul wordt ondersteund door tracks als Strings Of Life van Derrick May, Alley’s Of Your Mind van Juan Atkins en Kevin Saunderson’s Good Life. De film duurt 64 minuten en wordt in Nederland ook op 5 Days Off vertoond.
