Hacienda Classics

Laurent Garnier debuteerde in The Hacienda, The Chemical Brothers ontdekten er de dance en zo zijn er wel meer grote artiesten die belangrijke wortels in The Hacienda hebben. Daarnaast was de club in de jaren tachtig en begin negentig de thuisbasis van vele bekende bands als Joy Division, The Smiths, New Order, Happy Mondays en zelfs Oasis. The Hacienda werd in 1980 opgericht en ook gefinancierd door New Order en platenmaatschappij Factory Records en de club opende op 21 mei 1982 voor het eerst haar deuren. Vanaf dat moment was de zaak een broedplaats voor elektronische muziek, die veel heeft bijgedragen aan het ontstaan van de clubcultuur in Engeland. Van over de hele wereld kwamen mensen, van artiesten tot publiek, op de club af. Maar The Hacienda werd halverwege de jaren negentig gesloten, omdat er teveel problemen waren met bendes en drugs.

Oudgediende Peter Hook, bassist van New Order en mede-oprichter van The Hacienda, heeft nu een tastbare herinnering aan die vervlogen tijden gemaakt. Hij heeft drie cd’s samengesteld, met daarop nummers die de magie van destijds weer even moeten doen herleven. “The Haçienda was built on blood, sweat and tears… I think it’s safe to say we made every mistake in the book, that said it was the most magical time and I wouldn’t change any of it. I have so many special memories from those days, the way the DJ’s would select the tunes especially for the club, I remember Sasha’s first set, the atmosphere was electric and he played the best set of his life, the music was perfect as was the crowd, when we left you just knew you’d been a spectator of something very special indeed,” aldus Peter Hook.
